About
I built this house myself, way back in 2014. You may recognize it from the documentary "Small Is Beautiful," which was featured on Netflix a couple years ago. This has been my house for the past six years but, tragically, I’ve fallen hopelessly in love and will be moving into a more-than-just-me sized living space in the near future. As such, I’ve decided it’s time to find a better home for my house.
This house was a labor of love, and I've poured countless hours into building, renovating, and improving it. Its small footprint and size allow it to be moved and parked easily. Having lived in it for the past six years, I can personally attest to its viability as a small living space. Everything you see has been hand-built by myself with storage and livability in mind.
The closet is a fully-unique design that allows each shelf to pull out like a drawer while also being fully height-adjustable in order to maximize storage space. The couch pulls out into a queen-size bed, and has three large storage drawers beneath. The galley kitchen is comprised entirely of hand-built drawers and cabinets, and includes a propane stove, a 1.6 gallon electric water heater, and a large fridge. The interior walls and ceiling are all tight-knot cedar which gives the house a feeling of warmth, especially at night when the lights are on. There’s an adjustable cat (or tiny dog) door that works with a magnetic collar, allowing your pet to go in while keeping other critters out. The house was wired for 30 amps, but I’ve only ever been plugged into a standard outlet and, so long as I’m not operating every electrical appliance at once, I’ve found a standard 20 amps to be plenty of current.
The bathroom consists of a “custom, hand-built compost toilet” if you want to be fancy about it, but “concealed dirt bucket” is probably more accurate. I originally had lofty goals of creating a wooden wet-bath which have since been abandoned in favor of using the bathroom mainly as storage. It’s all been plumbed for a shower, so it wouldn’t be too difficult for a skilled individual to turn it into a shower/wetbath space. Otherwise it can be used as a toilet, or converted into additional storage/living space.
When it comes to wear and tear, the house is beginning to show its age in some ways. The exterior could use some love, the siding could be re-stained, and there’s still a small bit of graffitti that someone tagged while I was building it and which I’ve never taken the time to remove. The interior trim bears some scratch marks from where my cat decided to add her “personal flair,” there are dings in the floor, etc. But everything is in full working order and, despite some cosmetic wear, has all been built to last.
I’m selling the house as-is with all furniture and appliances included.
