Are You Ready To See The World? Are You Ready To Roam?
There is no doubt that schoolbus conversions (a.k.a. Skoolies) have become one of the most sought after tiny houses on wheels in the last 4-5 years. And while some people look for rolling 5-star accommodations other people are intrigued by the more nimble and versatile homes. If you’re one of the latter then this 24-foot Chevy mid-bus is for you!
Built on a General Motors chassis, this 2009 6-window, gasoline-powered mid-bus has just 121,000 miles on the engine and an almost brand-new, rebuilt transmission. Custom painted in a powder blue with white trim this tiny home is an off-grid convert with 16-100 watt solar panels, 800 amp-hours of battery storage, Nature’s Head composting toilet, and a 100-gallon freshwater tank.
The cockpit area of the bus is similar to a Chevy 3500 van with a comfortable captain’s chair, a face deck stereo, heat/AC controls, and entry to the bus. The traditional door control has been removed as the front bus door (passenger side) has been replaced with a single, full-view windowed door. Just behind the entry steps to the bus is a swivel, captain’s chair perfect for a co-pilot, furry friend, or even a car seat. Across from it is a custom, velvet-covered couch that makes for a comfortable ride down the highway or a great place to read a book or have a cup of tea when not in transit. Moving down the driver’s side of the bus just beyond the couch is a kitchenette complete with a double-door base cabinet, three storage drawers, a beautiful wood countertop, and a sink with a commercial type faucet. Across from the couch and kitchenette is a salvaged set of cubby lockers that allow for extra storage and great conversation. They also hide the bathroom portion of the bus which is further obscured by a closing, privacy curtain. Inside the bathroom is the Nature’s Head commode and a fiberglass shower stall. There is also an almost full-size, brushed metal refrigerator across from the bathroom and next to the kitchenette. It is truly a clever use of space!
Because the bus has been home to a 60-year old, the rear bedroom has a feature that not many skoolies do. Atop the queen size bed is a small, single bed bunk. It allows for space for parents and child, but also makes the occasional movie in bed or midnight snuggle super easy to accommodate. The mini-split HVAC unit is installed in the rear of the bus so provides great temperature during those sleeping hours. One might think of it as a cozy sleeping cave if it were not for the shabby-chick, shiplap walls and ceiling. Coupled with the rear windows and the emergency exit the back bedroom really is quite well lit. For late-night though there are recessed lights throughout the bus. One of the other well thought out features of the bus conversion is the shelving just a foot or so beneath the ceiling that wraps around the entire interior. The shelf also has a ledge bar that keeps almost everything in place when out exploring on board.
At $60,000 this 143 square foot adventure mobile-cum-tiny house on wheels is ready for her next adventure and for you to call her ‘home, sweet home.’
