Hearken Back To “The Old Days” Of The Tiny House Movement

Back in 2007 a man built a house less than 100 square feet in size that he took around the USA to show people that you didn’t need a huge house to be comfortable and meet the needs of human existence. His home on wheels had a sitting area, a book shelf, a small cooktop, a compost toilet, a water filter, and a sleeping loft. What else did he need he reasoned? The world was his living room and the THOW was a place to come in out of the weather. In today’s marketplace those basic tenants have seemingly been replaced by high-end finishes and multiple lofts. But in West Bath, Maine there is a 16ft. long, 136 sq.ft. tiny house on wheels that hearkens back to those early days.

Built by Amish craftsmen and perched atop a tandem axle trailer this home is a traditional wood-framed home with a gable roof clad in blue standing seam metal, exterior siding of brown wood lap siding, a single entry door with small porch, and 5 vinyl windows. What it lacks in sophistication it makes up for in craftsmanship and functionality.

Walking in the front door is to also walk under the cantilevered storage loft above. The door leads into a living room space with custom 3-seat padded bench and plenty of wall room for a flat screen TV or art display. That same wall has an awesome built in, electric fireplace. A few steps further introduces a beautiful, built-in china hutch and ladder to the loft. The walls throughout the home are pine tongue & groove with a honey finish and the floor is dark wood click flooring.

The kitchen and the bathroom split the 2nd half of the house with the bathroom on the left (with curtain divider) and the L-shaped kitchen on the right. The kitchen features a stainless steel oval basin directly in front of a window, pine butcher block countertop, a 2-burner LP range, and a small brushed stainless steel fridge beneath the range. The bathroom is traditionally plumbed with a flush commode and a fiberglass surround shower stall.

Back out in the main house the 8-rung ladder leads up to the sleeping loft that with its gable pitch can accommodate a queen size mattress with head room and lights. There is also a window at the head of the bed that allows for both air circulation and a great morning view! Opposite of the sleeping loft is the storage loft that while a bit smaller still allows room for seasonal items (Christmas boxes, Halloween scaries, etc), linens, and more! It is accessible by the same ladder as the sleeping loft, which is subsequently designed to hook on to a galvanized metal bar at either end.

Not only is this house styled from a simpler time in the modern tiny house movement but its price reflects a simpler time as well; affordable and ready to move!
