About

We have a wonderful off grid tiny home (16x20') for rent on a wooded acre of land on the east side of the Big Island. Or possibly land to rent to you while you build your own tiny home on wheels.

Our tiny home is nicely equipped including flush toilet and hot showers and it runs on solar panels for power and has catchment rainwater into 1000 gallon storage so there are no utility bills. It has a propane powered fridge and stove.

It's coming up for rent May 1 - that date could be flexible depending on your needs and also on our situation as one of our jobs may be changing.

Here's the thing, we've had some great renters but money is an issue because the island's economy is bad and jobs are scarce. So you're going to have to be the unique person/couple who have an off grid tiny home dream but enough money to pay for several months rent up front with the best scenario being a guaranteed income from somewhere other than an island job. If that's you, and you're serious, contact us.

We're not looking for vacation rentals but a year to year lease.

*There is also the possibility that if you have the right stuff and really fall in love with the island as we did, you can rent some land from us while you build your own tiny home on wheels. The zoning rules in this area are quite accommodating and we have neighbors who live in anything from a yurt to a Volkswagen camper to a million dollar home.*

You would be living in a very eco-friendly, artistic and eclectic community where orchid farms and yoga retreats exist side by side. Where there is a circus training center up the road in Seaview. Where people attend drum circles on the black sand beach in Kehena on Sundays, sometimes sans clothes. Where you can snorkel in the tide pools and see amazing ocean life or head into Pahoa and have an amazing meal at Kaleo's while being serenaded by local talent. This truly is a "Live and Let Live" kind of place and you can be as 'mainstream' or 'out there' as you choose to be.

If you're not local, here is a great site to check out what there is to see and do in Puna, near the cabin. http://stayhawaii.com/page-things-to-do-%26-see-in-puna-hi-16.html

Pahoa, the closest town, has several amazingly good restaurants and even a Longs Drugs and several grocery stories and services like banks, hardware store, laundromat, pubs, even a free swimming pool and skate park. . . if that isn't enough, Hilo (pop. 50,000) is only half an hour from Pahoa and has every store you'd need. Yes, even a WalMart.

This property is at the end of a trail off the highway and surrounded by reserve land so it's a nice hideaway. You're near all the natural attractions that make nearby Vacationland and Kapoho vacation rentals well loved.

Kapoho is nicknamed the 'blue hole', the south easternmost point of the island where its usually sunny, even when its raining just a few miles up the mountain. A good place to live that has amazingly fertile cinder soil.

It's just a short bike ride to Champagne pond, the hot pond (Ahanalui), Lava Tree State Park, Pohoiki (Isaac Hale park) for surfing, swimming or barbequing in the park. And the lighthouse just down the road is a fantastic place to watch the sunrise. Amazing!

The yard is a full acre and it is fenced - with large wire fencing - good enough to keep in a large dog or goats.

The house is a comfortable size for one or two and there is a loft area over the bathroom that's big enough for a couple of guests to sleep too, or used for storage.

You'll be living 'off the grid', with two solar panels feeding your deep cycle batteries and inverter. This is enough power for the water pump, lights, fans, and to charge your cell phone and laptops and run other small devices for two people. The fridge and stove are propane. It's an earth-friendly way to live and the great part is that there are no utilities to pay.

Water is from rain catchment in two sealed black 1000 gallon tanks (the best kind to block any critters from falling in or algae from growing), plenty for drinking and hot showers with the propane instant water heater. If you happen to hit a dry spell, the county provides free water but you have to arrange transport. There is an outside shower and an inside tub/shower in the bathroom too and the bathroom has a regular flush toilet. Or you can use the original outhouse if you want to go 'full backwoods'.

The yard has a mixture of grassy areas, with some pineapple, banana, passion fruit, flowers and noni plants already growing. There are many ironwood trees in and around the yard. Tons of room to grow your own food if you'd like. This soil is loose cinder and exceptionally rich, and will grow pretty much any food with amazing speed.

You can get a good cell signal (AT&T) on the yard, so a smartphone or laptop with a stick works or just buy a cheap TracFone to use.

We require responsible renters who have renting or ownership experience and our rental application includes multiple references and a financial credit check.

Looking for someone who loves nature, and will take good care of the place. The yard takes work and you will have to do some weed eating to keep the growth down with the provided weedeater.

No party animals please. This is *strictly* a drug free property. Due to past experiences, use of illicit drugs, including pot, on site is grounds for eviction.

There was a recent outbreak of lava from the volcano flowing towards the town of Pahoa 8 miles away. But as of March 16 it's officially been dead. There's still lava activity near the summit but not at Pahoa anymore which is good news! Now you can drive just a few miles up the mountain and see where the lava came near the village and flowed right into our transfer station!

From May 3 - 18 you can call me at 808 397 1002.
