The Tiny House Reimagined in Waldorf, Maryland

One of the arguments that have plagued the modern tiny house movement for more than a decade is that tiny houses on wheels are just too narrow. They make everything seem so one-dimensional. It’s true. In a number of tiny houses, there is a feeling of narrowness that equates to ‘too small’ even if they are 300+ square feet. This is not the case at all though with The Haven, an innovative shed conversion in Waldorf, Maryland that accommodates 4 with creature comforts to spare!

From the outside, the structure definitely looks like a shed/house hybrid due to features such as the double utility door on the side that was initially intended for a lawn tractor or ATV access. That has been sealed though and from the inside shows no remnants of a shed. Wrapped in vinyl siding with vinyl windows and even shutters, the 240 sq.ft. Haven looks like a miniature version of almost any house in suburban America. It is both cute and functional. Access to the inside of the house is through a large door complete with keyless entry and half moon window.

Once inside perhaps the most striking feature is the smooth finish of the white interior walls. The small home is bright and open feeling despite its size. Again, it shatters the idea that tiny houses are little more than hallways with partitions.

Directly across from the front entry is the kitchenette that is primarily a sage color base cabinet with 3 cabinet doors and 4 drawers. The countertop is a marble-type stone finish with a white ceramic deep farm-style sink, gold swan’s neck faucet, and even a glass top, 4-burner stove. The hardware is gold to match the faucet. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in style.

To the left of the kitchen is the sleeping/living area which is a clever 2-story lofted design with space for a queen bed downstairs and a double bed atop the suspended loft. The downstairs area also has a beautiful double window with half-moon transom that further enhances the open feeling of the space. There are a couple of obvious configurations that would allow you to create a generous space for sleeping and a dedicated space for lounging. The loft space is tucked into a dormer so while the headspace can be a bit tricky, it is sizable enough for a double bed that has a great view into the home. The loft is also finished with the same vinyl plank, waterproof flooring that is found throughout the house.

Across the house to the right of the kitchenette is the bathroom and closet area that is spacious and private. With its double farm-style sliding doors it can be closed off from the rest of the house giving complete privacy. The bathroom is a Cedar tongue and groove which is great in an area that is prone to moisture build-up as Cedar does not easily absorb moisture and dries out faster than most other woods. The bathroom has a standard low-flow flush commode, a single sink vanity with double doors for storage, a functioning drawer beneath the sink, a hanging mirror, and task lighting for your morning routine. The bathroom also has an overhead light with a vent for air circulation. And if that weren’t enough, the vent is also a Bluetooth capable, wireless speaker so you can pump in your favorite playlist without risking your phone around so much water! Across from the sink is a 42” shower stall that is finished with a sleek, yet exotic porcelain tile that has a Morrocan pattern in black and white. The showerhead provides a great spray making bathtime more like spa time!

A neat hidden feature of the tiny house is the storage above the bathroom. Because of the elevation and pitch of the ceiling, the standard finishing of the bathroom allows for a small nook (7’ deep by 5’ wide) above the bathroom that in this case is concealed by a wall and swinging hay loft access door. It can be used as a very private reading nook (if small, enclosed spaces don’t bother you) or storage that is out of sight and out of mind.

The Haven is a very clever retrofit with style and thought. It can blend into any American neighborhood or look perfect in a remote setting as the center of your homestead. It is just a fraction of the cost of a larger cottage in Anytown, USA, and will give you financial freedom and a safe home a whole lot quicker.
