About
The dispute in the modern tiny house movement has always been whether tinies with lofts were practical in the long term. A rash of single level living homes emerged and purists began saying without a loft it just wasn’t a tiny house. The argument can be compared to the architectural discussion in the mid-1970s comparing two-story Cape Cods from the post-war years to the ranch houses that were emerging in the suburbs. Ultimately it is a matter of taste as opposed to size of whether you built up or out. The compromise of traditional homes came with the split-level made popular in television shows like the Brady Bunch and now the compromise of THOWs comes with houses like that available in this listing. Why settle for just up or just out? Why not have both and that is just what this listing has. Tucked within just 180 square feet there is a spare room that can hold a queen size bed, or a small couch, and a huge loft that can hold a king size bed. Up and out!
The home itself is only a year old and currently resides at the popular Simple Life community in Flat Rock, NC. Built on a 24’ heavy duty, tandem axle Kaufman trailer, the tiny house is a mixture of vinyl siding and cedar siding, wrapped around traditional wood framing. There are 8 windows and an inward swing entry door with nine glass panes. The roof is galvanized metal and it is full on-grid powered by a 30-amp electrical system.
Once inside the house is minimal, allowing for maximum floor space. There is vinyl plank flooring, beadboard walls, oak stairs, and oak trim throughout. The front door opens directly into the kitchenette which utilizes a Galanz 7.6 cu retro fridge, a matching Galanz toaster oven, and a plug-in electric cooktop. The kitchen also has a single set of base cabinets and a single set of upper cabinets. The base cabinet has a drop-in, stainless steel sink with dual spray faucet.
To the right of the kitchenette is the bathroom which is kept private by a barn door. The bathroom has a Nature’s Head composting toilet and a simple shower stall. There is a washer/dryer hookup as well. Above the bathroom and accessible by ladder stairs just on the inside of the front door is the large loft. It slopes downward to match the roofline of the house. The loft has LED recessed lighting, 110V outlets, and a Shou Sugi Ban ceiling. It is a great space for a comfortable night’s sleep.
On the opposite end of the house and also behind a barn door is the private room. Able to serve as a bedroom or an office or a den, the space is quite versatile and is a generous size. Because of the large windows it gets great natural light and has open shelving attached to the wall.
At its current listing price of just $48,000 this tiny house is everything one could want with still enough space to customize and personalize.
