About
As it’s name may suggest, Captain Ron The Bus is a seaworthy (read: ready for the open road) 2009 International 3000 School Bus Conversion. Powered by a MaxxForce Diesel DT 9 engine and an Allison MD transmission, the roughly 30-foot long tiny house on wheels has an internal size of 23’ x 74’ and only 218,000 miles.
The outside of Captain Ron is a two-tone Caribbean blue and white and has a front entry door similar to that of a sticks ‘n bricks home. The outside of the skoolie also sports a rooftop wooden deck, perfect for making your unruly guests walk the plank!
Once inside the front door you are met with the cockpit of the vessel which has two captain's chairs for a fun ride down the road. There is also a 6” mounted monitor for the Veclesus Backup at the rear of the bus. Walking through the home there is seating for seven including four seats with seatbelts and a twin bus child seat with restraints; perfect for the young skippers. The front portion of the bus also has a mounted TV for travel entertainment and a kitchenette with a sink and storage cabinet. Both the sink and the interior shower are provided water by a Seaflo water pump with independent shutoff and a Bosch hot water heater.
Just beyond the passenger seating is a set of twin bunk beds for Captain Ron’s crew, as well as a folding queen bed. The folding of the bed allows the aisle to stay completely open and for crew members to make their way outside to the 4’ x 8’ rear deck for a little dock party.
In addition to the berthing areas, there is also an interior shower and a commode in a tiled bathroom with privacy curtains. There is also an RV-style shower on the outside of the bus as well as a water inlet in order to fill the two 40-gallon tanks.
The ceiling and the walls are pine T&G and insulated with R12 to keep the cool air from the portable air conditioning unit and the window unit inside and the heat of the beach outside. For safety, Captain Ron has added a smoke detector, a Co2 detector, flares, and a fire extinguisher.
As if the open road of these United States weren’t enough, Captain Ron The Bus is also geared up to go off-road and live a bit more remotely. In addition to the Predator generator on the rear deck, the skoolie also has a 380-watt solar panel on top with a Solar master shutoff. It sends power surging through a 2500-watt inverter charger and is controlled by a Victron smart solar charger controller (MPPT 100). The bus also has a Victron Connect BMV-712 along with four 6v batteries running parallel for a 12v system. All of this equipment can be harnessed through a 110v exterior port plug. It is quite a system for quite a bus.
As the infamous Captain Ron from the 1992 family comedy once said, “The best way to find out, Kitty, is to get her out on the ocean.” That is just what you need to do if you want to experience adventure out in the open.
