The idea of living on a school bus is not a new one. Yet somehow the thought of taking to the open road in a vehicle that once sat hungry, young minds is incredibly cool. Just as those students traveled to schools and places they would ultimately learn countless lessons, so could you, in your skoolie sojourning forward to adventures and places unknown. The thrill is none so strong as it is in this 1999 International Bluebird 3800 converted school bus designed for the mountains and natural playgrounds off the grid!
Designed and built out as an “adventures skoolie” the exterior looks almost as it did when first purchased by a school system a couple of decades ago with slight upgrades. The paint is a peanut butter tan, three windows on each side toward the middle of the rig have been blacked out to offer more build space and privacy inside and silver custom storage bays were added.
As you step in the first thing to notice is that the old bus driver’s seat has been replaced with a more comfortable captain’s chair. The steps up lead to a beautiful run of vinyl wood flooring. The style and sophistication is immediate. The front portion of the bus houses a custom-built and upholstered couch on one side and a custom-built and upholstered love seat on the other.
Next to the loveseat is the kitchen which features a large butcher block countertop, a 3-burner propane cooktop, a porcelain double-basin sink with a large neck faucet, base cabinets and upper cabinets. All the windows have privacy coverings and the kitchen even has a patterned tin backsplash. Built into the base cabinets is also a small fridge perfectly sized for the space.
Across from the workspace in the kitchen is a small table for two and could easily accommodate more. There is also a lovely, live edge cedar trim around the top perimeter of the bus that hides a strip of multi-channel LED lights. It is perfect for creating a mood in the tiny house.
The front of the bus is sectioned off from the rear by a wall built with multi-color pallet wood. It is a great touch and really does make the two halves of the bus seem private. Before the bedroom is a wet bath on one side complete with a Dometic RV commode and a small sink as well as storage on the other side. The bed is then in the rear of the bus and is a cozy cave if you will, perfect for snuggling and getting a good night’s rest after a day of activity.
The home is built out smartly and has a rugged charm about it that is perfect for those who want to live on the road but not in a more traditional RV.
The skoolie recently serviced and inspected. It is registered as a 'motorhome' and does not require a commercial drivers license!
The diesel engine is a reliable T444E and the bus itself is rear-wheel drive, with an Allison 4-speed automatic transmission. It has only 136,000 miles which means that this engine is in its adolescence & ready for any cross country road trip you could throw at it.
Built specifically for off-grid living, the skoolie is powered by a 3,000-watt Renogy inverter,/charger a 40 amp Renogy DC to DC charger, two 100-watt solar panels, and three 100-amp hour Smart Lithium Renogy batteries.
The bus also comes equipped with a 30-gallon ASME propane tank which runs the ventless propane heater mounted in the bedroom and the stove in the kitchen. Also on board is a 45-gallon freshwater tank, a 50-gallon black/grey water tank, and a 4-gallon Bosch electric water heater.
As if all of that weren’t enough, the converted school bus also has a Dickinson Newport wood stove to augment the electric space heater and the factory vent heat near the driver seat.
All in all, this is an incredible home and listed at a price that is perfect for purchase.
