MO bus, MO better: a conversion bus in the show-me-state
At 32-foot long this 1992 International 3800 school bus displays all the convention of a reliable driver as well as all the adventure of a road-worthy RV. Originally renovated in 2016 the Cummins diesel and Allison transmission only has 87,000 miles on them. In addition to a new set of batteries, this tiny house on wheels is poised to provide years more of memory-making.
The skeleton of the bus sports the original insulation and the floor is not insulated. It does have a rubber liner, plywood, underlayment, and then flooring though so in inclement weather a throw rug or two will keep the home perfectly warm while not trapping in moisture. The outside is painted an almond color with brown accents and maintains its almost original school year charm complete with a horizontal rubber bumper running from front to back. The bus also still have the school bus style stoplights, caution lights, blinking ambers, extension mirrors, convex mirrors, vertical sliding windows, and its original bi-fold bus entry door. It is a beautiful hybrid of the bus’s previous life with its current iteration. Speaking of the current iteration, the entry to the bus still has rubber step treads but quickly leads into wood plank laminate flooring from front to bathroom.
The interior walls are constructed with beaded plywood and beaded panel board and the main living space is comprised of a DIY leatherette couch (with storage), an armchair, above head storage, and a flatscreen television for nighttime entertainment. The windows all have Venetian blinds and fabric privacy screens. The interior is lit with LED puck lighting throughout. The interior height is 6’6” and the electrical service is 30-amp.
Beyond the main living area is the dining room and kitchen space. The kitchen is simple but highly functional with Formica countertops, upper and lower cabinets, a stainless steel sink, and an RV-style gas oven with a 3-burner range. The fridge is a brushed aluminum, apartment-size unit that can run off propane, AC, or DC power. To do dishes with warm to hot water the bus is equipped with a Marey Power Gas 10L 3.1 GPM Propane Gas Digital Panel Tankless Water Heater. The water pump is a Flojet 03526-144A Triplex Diaphragm Automatic Water System Pump that runs at 2.9 GPM, 50 PSI, 12 volt DC. The system is more than adequate for full-time living. The dining room has a pocket table that will easily seat 2 adults as well as 2 dining chairs that double as seating for the living room. While the tiny house bus requires shore power it does have a battery bank consisting of two batteries located under the couch in the living room that is used primarily for the lights, the bed, the toilet, the water pump, the furnace started, and the fridge (if desired). Speaking of the bed….
The bedroom is in the rear of the rig (past the bathroom) and doubles as a fully-functioning office space for two. The Queen bed raises to the ceiling with a wench and pulley system powered by the aforementioned battery bank. Of course, it is slower going up because of the power draw but it functions consistently and when lifted also allows for a 2’ x 5’ closet in addition to storage space beneath the desks. It truly is a wonderful use of space for anyone who wants to be location independent.
Just before the bedroom/office is the amply sized bathroom. With a 32” x 32” shower stall, an Air Head composting toilet, glass sink, and tile throughout, the bathroom is quite luxurious for a bus conversion!
In addition, the International school bus conversion also has a 50-gallon fresh and a 50-gallon grey water tank, a 35,000 BTU propane furnace, and an 18,000 BTU air conditioner with heat strip. It could be said this bus is turnkey ready for its next lucky owner but the entry door is keyless and the rig is highly secure.
