Life Uncontained
As a building block, shipping containers are both durable and versatile—convert one into a tiny home or a backyard office, or stack and arrange them to create a bold residence. In addition to saving on construction costs, upcycling an old container can be an eco-friendly alternative to building from the ground up. Now you can own your very own 20'x8' (160 sq. ft.) container home built by Forte Shelter in Redlands, CA.
At first sight, the home seems to be a cedar box with black trim and a few windows. Nothing overly remarkable. But when you get to the front door you quickly realize the home has a Simpson solid core wood entry door and operable cargo doors at one end of the unit. It is a truly functional living space and the 3 large windows are Andersen 1000 Series Fibrex windows. For added security, the front door has a keyless entry system with a numeric keypad.
Directly across from the front door is the kitchenette which is absolutely gorgeous. With a nod to the modern, it features a quartz countertop, electric induction burner, white oak floating shelves, white oak veneer cabinets, 23-inch stainless steel sink, and matte black faucet. It is also has a window directly above the sink so you can get a good view while fixing your morning cup of coffee or washing up the dinner dishes. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in style!
To the left of the kitchen is the living space/sleeping space with a comfortable 3-person couch that folds into a double bed. The area is dynamic though in that it is just in front of the usable cargo doors which allows you to expand your home into the great outdoors for some truly fresh air. During the day when the couch is in a sitting position, a drop-down table can be lifted from the wall and used as either a table for two or a work desk. There are a number of plugs along the lower portion of the walls throughout the house so it is never hard to charge a device or keep your laptop powered up. The television is also recessed into the wall on the table side of the house and can be viewed from the couch or while laying down in bed.
The opposite end of the container is the bathroom and what a glorious bathroom it is! The room is outfitted with a modern, wall-hung toilet, a built-in waste ejection pump, and a tankless water heater. The shower has a stucco finish, glass doors, and a beautiful river rock/wood slat floor. Perhaps the coolest part of the bathroom - which is certainly overlooked - is the built-in shelf across from the commode. Because part of framing in a cargo container and finishing it with drywall adds a little extra thickness to the walls, there are plenty of opportunities to add little built-ins such as the one in the bathroom and the area where the television is.
The entire cube has luxury vinyl plank flooring and the walls are finished with wood baseboard and drywall.
Ready to be shipped to your land, this container home is powered simply by a standard 50-amp RV cord. It has four exterior lights and two exterior outlets. Installation on your property is easy as well. Once on-site, it is dropped, leveled with a car jack, connected by PVC pipe to the on-site sewer, and tied into a water spigot. It has a mini split / heat pump ceiling cassette by Senville.
