About

For Sale: The Dorothy Jean, your new Tiny House on land or sea
1930 Grandy Dreamboat and custom trailer

Asking $25K or best offer (sale includes trailer)

Built on South Lake Union in Seattle, Washington in 1928, this wooden cruising yacht has been deeply cared for throughout the years. The hull is in incredible shape and was painted and cared for thoroughly at Jensen Motorboat in Seattle every few years. It has been hauled out and on land, resting on a custom-built trailer since 2019. I have been living in at as a tiny house. Previous to 2019, it was moored in North Lake Union for many years. I purchased this boat in 2010 and have cared for it, continuing to upgrade the interior and exterior for longevity. I installed a maple floor and wrap around couch with storage in the main cabin, a fold down desk and a Cubic Mini Wood Stove (Grizzly model with stovetop roaster) for additional wintertime heat and cooking during power outages. The canvas roof was left intact and covered with ¼ ply and EPDM rubber roofing to create a more sustainable roof with eves, adding further protection from the weather. Sleeping cabin insulated with wool for added warmth. Custom cassette tape rack in galley door. Electric water pump installed for galley and bathroom to have running water from the storage tank (a major improvement over the previous foot pump). Extra circuit installed to have 2 full circuits and breaker box with shore-power.

Sale includes mini-fridge, Cubic Mini wood stove, 2-burner induction stovetop, heated toilet seat and a functioning kerosene cast-iron cooktop and oven. It does NOT include a dinghy but it does include a complimentary bottle of Captain Morgan’s rum from…2013, a very good year for rum.

This boat is currently setup to use as a tiny house on land. If you would like to return it to the sea, you will need to reinstall a tank for the head (it is currently plumbed to a larger above ground septic tank, the ships wheel and gear stick (I have both) and return it to the water gradually over several days in a sling with bilge pumps running and humans monitoring it. This can be done at a boatyard. We did this numerous times at Jensen’s Motorboat. This is normal and the nature of a wooden boat. The planks are dry and need to soak up water to form a seal. If you just set this boat directly into the ocean, it will sink. DO NOT DO THIS.

Be in touch if you want to by this. Do not be in touch to “talk boats”.
Thanks!

Boat Information:
DOROTHY JEAN is a true sedan classic wooden motor yacht designed by Mr. Ted Geary and built by Grandy Boat Company (US). Her cedar planked hull is steel fastened on bent oak frames with prominent keel and skeg hinged rudder. The vessel’s upper works including cabin and coachroof are constructed from boat lumber with bright and canvas weather decks. The vessel is well protected by marine grade coatings. She is been kept under covered moorage in Seattle, Washington.
Most forward is an enclosed marine toilet compartment followed by a sleeping cabin and galley. Up and after is a furnished main cabin with helm station set to port and companion seating. Large single-pane glass windows surround the main cabin with side windows. An open cockpit is most after.

The vessel is propelled by a single (1) 100-hp Gray Marine gasoline engine turning a fixed pitch 3- blade bronze propeller through a reversing reduction marine gear. Nuisance bilge water cleared by electric pump with automatic control. Steering is mechanical with cable propulsion controls.

Vessel has battery operated engine start and house electrical systems with over-current protection (OCP), insulated copper wiring, and engine driven DC alternator. 120-volt AC (VAC) electrical loads are powered by a 30-amp shore-power connection.

Trailer information:
This trailer was custom built in 2019 and has only been used to tow the boat to its current location and have the boat resting on it. It’s basically new.
