Smallworks Elegant Lane Cottage

The good folks over at Smallworks in Vancouver recently contacted me to share their recently completed cottage built for one of their clients.

It has a 400 square feet blueprint and comes with four different floor plans. The loft allows all downstairs room to serve as the living area. Michael Lyons from Smallworks has shared with me that the Elegant Lane Cottage carries a modest price tag and those interested can contact her (see below) for pricing.

The Elegant Lane Cottage has the same footprint and height as a standard garage, so there is no loss of backyard space or light.

The cottage is “functionally flexible” in that is can be used for guest room, revenue suite, more family space and of course, a full-time home.

The sleeping loft above bathroom area means full use of 400 s/ft main level as living space. High ceilings throughout makes the small house feel spacious

Diamond shaped clerestory windows high in the roof line maintain privacy while maximizing natural light

What’s great about this little cottage is the open feel mixed with its’ modern design. A home like this would be ideal for a couple that realizes the benefits of living in a small space.

This one is quite beautiful! I always worry about the loft style though. I would love a tiny home but I worry that as I age it won’t be so easy for me to go up and down a ladder.

I was thinking the exact same thing, as you get older, who wants to go up and down a ladder

Hey us westerners must be strong even in our old age. Old People(70 and above) in the islands live fine alone in their houses and they are still doing manual work.I don’t know about the people who are above 90 but much of us won’t live that long anyway….

This is a beautifully done house and its finishes were well executed…except for one thing. As a kitchen designer, I just gotta tell ya, this kind of thing drives me nuts!
You’ve got the sink RIGHT NEXT TO THE COOKTOP!!! All your prep space is on the other side! Obviously this is designed by a man who doesn’t cook.

Dude! Split them apart! leave some counter space between the sink and the cooktop so the cook (ie, probably your wife) doesn’t have to prep on one side, pick it up and drag it over to the cooktop. (probably dropping half of it on the floor in the process) Basic kitchen design 101. It’s not enough for your space to look pretty. It actually needs to FUNCTION!

Actually, having cooked in all kinds of conditions and many places/cultures all over the world, and even cooked at sea……any configuration has it’s positives and negatives of arrangement. Part of the fun of being a cook is the creativity of working in a different space…if you let it, the experience of cooking in a differently configured space stretches your “comfort zone”, and you wind up becoming a more versatile cook who doesn’t easily get discombobulated or thrown off your stride by a mere fact of kitchen arrangement. ;)

I wouldn’t worry about the loft when I get older. It could then serve as a nice guest sleeping area and you could install a Murphy bed, futon, or other fold out design.

Thank goodness somebody is finally creating small houses with this crazy economy. I don’t know where most contractors heads are…yes, they want the mark up, but small just makes sense…………..

Love this little house. Beautiful floors, nice design of windows and doors gives it a lot of class.
Perhaps the kitchen sink could have a removable breadboard top to overcome one of the earlier comments about it being further separated from the stove. It is nice to have a longer bench space and the underneath drawers and cupboard probably function better this way.
Somehow microwave and appliance space could be installed or natural use will make everything else look messy and ruin the clean look. Overhead cupboard, and microwave shelf probably needed as lots of built in storage is really helpful in a small space.
Being an older person myself I could not climb ladders and find most sofa beds abominably uncomfortable as I imagine murphy beds would be as well. An open rail design would help safety for visiting grand kids or a half height wall for storage use or a study.

This is one of the most beautiful small houses I have seen. The lack of upper kitchen cabinets makes the small space appear to be larger. I think the sink would be better centered on the window though for symmetry and would allow the owner to look out more easily. Nice placement of the mirror in the bathroom, which creates the illusion of more space. Great job.
