We’re selling our 30′ Colorado Yurt Co. yurt… It’s awesome, but we don’t have a good place to put it up. It’s been in storage for 9 months, but everything is still in great condition.

The yurt was bought in 2009 and I assembled it for a friend in the Ozarks- NW Arkansas. It was used as a personal retreat I bought it from him in the fall 2012 and have had it in storage, waiting for the right moment to put it back up.

Instead we’re selling it because we need money for a home remodel project.

I don’t know why it was a surprise to me that fundamentally changing my life would fundamentally change the way I think about a lot of things. I don’t suppose it would be that surprising for people on the outside looking in. I wouldn’t say I was “worried” about moving into a tiny space exactly, but I had a few reservations. You know, like “could I do this?” and “what am I getting myself into?” Little things. As it turns out, changing my lifestyle in this way affected everything I do for the better. Here are just five things I have learned about myself after moving into the tiny house.

My time is my own. Someone once asked me what it was like now without a “regular job” and “all this time on [my] hands.” As it turns out, even though I have more control over my time that doesn’t mean that I have more of it. I have the same 24 hours each day that everyone else does, but I have to allocate them in a different way. When I was a recruiter I would find myself with idle time that I needed to fill with busy work. Now, if I want to walk away from the computer or check Facebook in the middle of the day I have no one to answer to but myself. It is liberating. I find that I am more productive.

I feel meaningful. Because I felt constrained in my full time job I never believed I was in control. For the most part I liked what I did and I was pretty good at it, but it wasn’t my passion. It was something I started doing after college because I was supposed to have a job with benefits. I would tell myself that I loved it from time to time but I never really did. Not for 15 years. Human beings are meant to have meaningful work in their lives. This is different for everyone. Another person might feel passionate about the very same job I felt was holding me back. Because of the tiny house I was able to take a leap of faith and try something else. I don’t regret it for a second.

I actually do like peace and quiet. I was always the person who needed to have the radio on while I was at work. Or, as soon as I got home I wanted the television to keep me company. As it turns out these things weren’t entertainment, they were a distraction. Now, when I watch TV or listen to music it is a conscious choice and I find that I enjoy it more than I did when I had 24 hour access to reality television. I didn’t think I would like the quiet of working in the tiny house in the mountains, but now I find that I can’t work without it.

I am more social. I was always kind of social but I am also I’m some sort of weird introvert/extrovert blend. I like having time to myself, but not too much of it. Because we live in a fairly remote location we try to make going “into town” an event. I really enjoy socializing and engaging with my community. In the past when I went out after work it was to unwind or relax but now it is about developing relationships.

I am a heck of a lot more organized. I was never very organized. It would annoy me to have to put something away when I only planned on using it again soon anyway. I would end up with piles of paperwork or mail or books scattered around the house. My clothes were almost never actually put away in the closet or dresser – I would just fetch things out of the dryer and try to make sure they weren’t too wrinkly before wearing them. Having a smaller space makes me more accountable for my things. Even when something is put away it isn’t too much trouble to get it out again. Tiny living made me neater.

Do you live in a tiny space? How has it affected your life? Are you thinking about moving into a tiny space? How do you expect that it will affect the way you live?
