Several years ago, I went down to Florida to visit my Aunt. I hadn’t seen her in a very long time and it was great to reconnect. The most interesting part about the trip was that she was living on a sailboat in a little town on the Gulf.

This was before Matt and I started building our tiny house and I would certainly say that the boat inspired us in some ways. The small sleeping space, the teeny but functional bathroom, the easy to use kitchen; the boat seemed like a perfect place to live. Just like our eventual tiny house, there was a big world outside the boat to enjoy. We spent that entire afternoon sailing through the gulf and sitting in the sun.

Last year, my Aunt came to visit us in our tiny house. She told us it reminded her of living on the boat. I realized – it is a lot like living on a boat, except we have mountains instead of water.

Here are some of the ways our tiny house is like a boat.

Conservation of Space. Every bit of storage space was carefully planned out to make the most of what we have. For example, we chose the loft bed so that we maximized our first floor space since we were building on an 8×16 foundation. The second, smaller loft over the door is used to store any items we don’t access daily. We even use the space under the sofa.

Conservation of Resources. We chose to build our tiny house off the grid. Our solar power system generates enough energy that we can run our laptops for work and turn lights on at night. While we have enough power to do anything we need, we don’t waste it. The same is true for our water. The shower we use is like a “boat shower” where we turn the water on, get wet, turn the water off, soap up, turn the water on, and rinse. In fact, we consume a lot less water in the tiny house than we did in our suburban home. We went from using over 100 gallons a day to only 3 to 5.

Living Deliberately. Our main motivation for building and living in a tiny house was to change our lives. We didn’t want to be conventional. We didn’t want to do things the way we were “expected” to. Living on a boat, or in a tiny house, is out of the norm and automatically makes you look at life differently. I want to connect with my community and reconnect with myself. Like Thoreau said, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”The idea of tiny living isn’t new and it isn’t limited to tiny houses on trailers. If you could live anywhere and do anything, what kind of home would you have?

Our tiny house in the mountains of North Carolina.

The idea of tiny living isn’t new and it isn’t limited to tiny houses on trailers. If you could live anywhere and do anything, what kind of home would you have?

1975 International. Perfect to live in off the grid or as a guest house. Gas engine in good shape and ready to move. I just had the alternator and carburetor rebuilt and the back lights repaired. Will need a new tire on the back dually for long distance travel and a new windshield, but I have moved it many times around the county with no problem the way it is. No plumbing or bathroom, though there is a kitchen sink that drains under the bus and an rv water heater if you want to add holding tanks and plumb it. I hauled water, used an outdoor composting toilet and lived in it snugly for 6 years.

Great deal! Must sell! Tiny House is in Oneida, KY and Land is in Ocala/Dunellon FL. House alone is worth $20000 according to many other posts!

When the house was finished and we planned to take it to FL. The engine blew in the tow vehicle before we could tow it to FL. We can’t afford a new one and would like to sell our house and land together, we will consider selling separately.

The house was built on a slightly used trailer (tires good but for a long trip may need to be replaced), by a California builder and a few other very knowledgeable trades men. The whole house is glued and screwed. Completely insulated with R-13 fiberglass, 16 inch on center studs throughout, sealed with caulk and foam. Once you close the door it is very peaceful and you don’t hear unwanted outside noise. Both lofts are carpeted (5×7 & 7×7) and can hold twin mattresses.

The Land is in Ocala FL, but near the Dunnellon line. Fully wooded (Live oaks, black oaks, pine trees) 1 acre lot across from a huge wide open FL cattle ranch with rolling hills, large Live Oaks and grazing cattle. In the back of the subdivision, very quiet rural area, with all kinds of shopping and the gulf coast near by. No lots are smaller than 1 acre. Dunnellon is a quaint FL town with Spanish moss hanging everywhere and just a nice comfortable, relaxed feeling. There are still plenty of modern day conveniences and Ocala is a much larger city with anything you’d ever want.

The house was constructed in sections and is very strong and well built. We didn’t skimp on anything. The exterior panels are LP Smartside. Manufactures description – LP® SmartSide® panels deliver all the warmth and beauty of traditional wood, plus the durability and workability of engineered wood. Our SmartGuard® manufacturing process actually improves upon nature, creating products that are engineered for strength, performance and protection against fungal decay and termites with a 50-year product warranty.
•Factory primed
•Pre-primed for exceptional paint adhesion
•Resistant to warping, splitting, cracking and delaminating
•Proprietary SmartGuard® process to help resist rot and termite damage

Floors have the trailer deck first, then a sub floor covered in Tyvek and finally Advantech flooring.
Water resistance and weatherability • Greater water resistance than commodity OSB or plywood
• No sanding due to moisture. Guaranteed2
Strength • 50-year transferable limited warranty2
• Superior nail holding power for high quality finished floor installation
• VIP+ Performance Design values are recognized for greater design bending strength and design stiffness than commodity OSB or plywood3

There are Cedar planks inside along with natural pine interior panels. Unfinished for a natural look. The only finished panel is in the bathroom ceiling to protect against moisture. Cedar planks look great, smell wonderful and keeps pests away! Attached to cedar ceiling planks is a beautiful ceiling fan, just the right size to cool the house and keep the air flowing.

Inside has two storage pantries on either side of the door. Then there is an open space where you can put a TV on either side of the wall. Room enough for a futon and a fold down table with two hide away stools.

Followed by a nice split fridge/freezer, with microwave on top. Next is an espresso sunken sink with storage. It all flows nicely, but could all be rearranged if someone wanted to remodel. Bathroom has a full size flushable toilet; flushes into septic tank or portable tank (included). Full size 3×3 shower, run by gravity tank (above in loft) or pressure from outside water source (could be hooked up to small water heater). Bathroom has vinyl tile and a space saver cabinet over toilet. Shower and sink on separate drain and can be recycled and used to flush toilet. 32 Gallon water tank sits in loft next to window currently and could be moved to different location if you’d like.

There is a storage area on the tongue of the trailer and can be used to store a small generator, spare tire, hose, electric cord, tools, etc.

Porch area is 2ft. and large enough for fold out chairs, this area could be extended with a fold out deck.

Two people could easily live in this Tiny House on wheels and it would make for a great apartment for a college student, a nice guest room for visitors, or possibly a nice mobile snack shack. So many possibilities.
